This paper pattern by Karen Stevens @kzstevens has all the instructions to make a Modern Japanese Rice Pouch (Komebukuro).

The traditional use for these pouches was to carry rice as an offering to temple during religious ceremonies, or to hold gifts destined for a close friend or relative.

They are traditionally hand sewn in a patchwork style which is perfect for using up small pieces of leftover fabric.

The two samples here are made in pieces from Sally Kelly's Fantasy fabric range (left) and Karen Lewis' Wayside and Blueberry park ranges (right).
